The Great Depression 1930s
The stock market crashed in the United States in 1929. This affected New Zealand’s exports like meat and dairy products. Countries overseas were scared to buy our exports because they were running out of money. Many people lost their jobs and became unemployed. Many shops, businesses and factories closed because people did not have jobs and money to spend. There were protests because people felt the government was not doing enough to support people and their families who did not have enough money to live on. Many people were struggling to have enough money to pay for housing, clothes and food.
