Thorndon Fair
Every year on the first Sunday of December Thorndon School organises The Thorndon Fair. Originally the Thorndon Society ran the fair until it was passed on to the school. It is known for being Wellington’s oldest, biggest, best street fair and runs along Tinakori Road and up Hill Street. The fair goes from 10am to 3pm. Stallholders come from as far north as Auckland and as far south as Christchurch.
The fair has been going on every year for approximately 35 years, and an estimate of 25,000 people visit the fair each year. The fair is Thorndon School’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and our whole school community helps out. The parents help run the schools stalls like the BBQ and the book store, and they help with the set up and clean up. The senior students of the school have a stall every year. For a while we have been selling strawberries and cream and bottles of water, but this year we are doing something called a Tombola, which is a little bit like a lucky dip, but there a dud prizes as well as really cool ones. The parents and children donate the prizes that people are going to win.
Every year I attend the fair with my friends and family. I live practically a few metres up the road from where the fair starts so I can go home and go back to the fair whenever I feel like it. It’s always fun to walk around the fair with all my friends taking heaps of photos and helping out on the stalls.
