Samoan Speech Competition

On the 13th July 2011, myself and two other students from EBIS participated in the Samoan Regional Competition held at the Te Akapuanga Hall in Porirua. We left our school quite early and drove out with our two Samoan Language Teachers and got there just in time. This year the topic we were given to prepare for was - 'Hosting guests at home.'

- Gillian

I was really nervous and scared that I might muck up and go all red. When it was my turn, and got called up I was really really nervous. I was the first person to go in my year group, so it was scary. There were 3 judges, and a lot of schools that entered the competition. This speech competition was for year 7 - 13 students.

Below are two of the three speeches performed that day in Porirua. They are both in the Samoan Language, and are about hosting a guest or guests at home. They say 'a child's first teachers are their parents' so before a Samoan child goes to school they learn respect by serving others and being able to host guests in their own home. Here, we are talking about the different ways of how to host guests in our own homes with the emphasis of FA'AALOALO (Respect) in all that we do.
